BEST OF MEXICO: 3 DAY TROPIAL EXPLORATION IN SOUTHERN VERACRUZ

BEST OF MEXICO: 3 Days of Tropical Exploration in Southern Veracruz

3 Days/2 Nights to Enjoy the Tropical Rain Forest Region in Veracruz México

This can be a fun 3 day Getaway Adventure if you are already going to be in the state of Veracruz or somewhere in México. Just meet your guide in your hotel lobby or Airbnb on day 1 in the city of Veracruz or Boca del Rio.
On this adventure trip, you will enjoy the tropical green rain forest beauty, visit small beach villages alongside the Gulf of México, and view tropical wildlife in their natural environment.
The Los Tuxtlas Region in the Mexican state of Veracruz is located 100 miles south of the historical port city of Veracruz. This is a recognized World Biosphere Area because of the vast amount of tropical trees, plants, animals, and birds.
It was said that Steven Spielberg had considered using this tropical area to film Jurassic Park. Once your local tour guide gets you into this area, you will immediately see what Mr. Spielberg saw … a backdrop of mysteriously beautiful volcanic hills draped in a skirt of green jungle.
FYI: You may not run into any other foreign travelers during this 3 day exploration adventure. Plus … for part of day 1, you will not have access to cell phone service and internet connections.

DAY 1:   (L,D)
Your personal English/Spanish speaking host guide will meet you at your hotel lobby or wherever you are staying in the city of Veracruz or Boca del Rio.
You will then travel a few hours south to a small rural seaside village where your group will board a boat for a ride on the ocean to explore a huge pirate cave, view tall rocky cliffs, and experience hundreds of sea birds found on an island rookery off the coast.
Lunch will be back on the beach at a small local restaurant.
Your journey will then continue down the Gulf of México coastline stopping at times to admire the panoramic views. Eventually, you will travel inland down a small two lane road which carries you through thick untouched tropical jungle. You may be able to smell the delightfully fresh oxygen-rich air created by the vast amount of plants and trees surrounding the road.
Your destination will be the lakeside town of Catemaco located in the heart of the Los Tuxtlas Region.
Dinner will be at a typical restaurant in town. You will overnight in a comfortable local hotel.
DAY 2:   (B,L,D)
After beakfast, it will be an exciting day of exploring the area adjacent to one of the largest lakes in all of México; Lake Catemaco. The 32 miles of shoreline is ringed by tropical dormant volcanic hills covered in jungle forest.
The road is not paved the whole way so get ready for a bouncy ride as you travel part way around the lake to a small jungle village where you will meet your local "jungle" guide. He does not speak English so your host guide will translate as he describes the medicinal purposes for some of the plants and trees you will encounter on your hike through the rain forest. There is a stone path to walk on but it is uneven and at times, may be wet from the mists of the waterfalls, humidity, and rain.
At the turn around point, there is a beautiful waterfall with a nice cool pool at its base. Bring swim clothes as you are welcome to wade and swim in this crystal clear pool. You can swim up to the base of the falls and take pleasure in letting the water give you a natural massage.
Back at the small jungle village, everyone will be invited for a typical lunch at a family's rustic home. You are even invited to help prepare the meal in their dirt floor kitchen over a woodburning stove.
On your drive to return to Catemaco, there is one more activitiy ... a lake boat ride to view tropical birds and monkeys who living on small forested islands in Lake Catemaco.
Dinner will be at a local typical restaurant in town.
DAY 3:   (B,L)
After breakfast, your group will check out and drive a short distance to a cigar manufacturing company. This area of southern Veracruz is condusive to growing tobacco. A guide from the company will lead you on a short tour to watch the many local workers as they cut, weigh, handroll, and package each individual cigar to be ready to ship to domestic and foreign destinations. For those who smoke cigars or have friends/relatives who do, you will have the opportunity to purchase them at the end of the tour.
A short hop, skip, and jump from the cigar company is a massive waterfall. Some call it the "Niagara Falls of Veracruz."
In a producer roll, Mel Gibson invested time at this waterfall filming a segment of a movie he produced some years back called, Apocalypto. He must of been impressed to select this location for his movie and we think you will be impressed too. During your visit there, your guide will let you view a clip from the movie.
Lunch will take place at a restaurant by the falls.
Note: There are 244 steps to reach the bottom of the falls. And remember, you will have to walk up them again to reach your tour vehicle.
There will be one more stop along the way before returning to the city of Veracruz and your hotel. In one of the towns you will pass, there is one of the original giant Olmec stone heads showcased in the center of town. Just like the waterfall, it is big and very impresive. It is still a mystery today as to how they carved and then moved this multi-ton sculpture.
Your guide will drop you off at the hotel of your choice and bid you, Buen Viaje. Dinner will be on your own.
